How to do Coloured PoPuPs and Other Neat Stuff

If you are accessing IRC chat rooms through your web browser or ICQ plugin you will be unable to do PoPuPs and other fancy things. You will also not be able to listen or play all those .wav, .mid and .mp3 sound files you keep seeing others play. This is because the ICQ software has very limited capabilities. To do the fun and fancy stuff you need a program called mIRC and some special scripts.

These instructions presume you have a basic familiarity with getting files off of the internet and installing them on your computer. You can download mIRC from http://www.mirc.com and find scripts from various places on the net. However to get you off to a colourful start I would suggest you download GlowNdark from http://GlowNdark.hypermart.net/ as it comes with quite a few PoPuPs included. It is a highly scripted version of mIRC5.51 which, at the time of this writing, is the latest version of mIRC. mIRC must be installed in its own folder and not as a sub-folder or certain portions will not function. Do Not, for example, install it in your Program Files folder

Once you have downloaded your software and installed it you will need to do the following:

  1. Connect to the Internet
  2. Open mIRC
  3. mIRC opens to the mIRC Options window, click ADD
  4. There are four fields to fill out, fill them out as follows:
  5. Leave the password field blank and click OK
  6. You are now back on the mIRC Options page and there are some fields to fill out there as well:
  7. Now beneath the ADD EDIT DELETE SORT buttons click on the black triangle to the right of the long white bar and select ICQ Chat then click on Connect To IRC Server.
  8. Click on the 3rd icon from the left - it looks like a yellow file folder - its title is Channels Folder
  9. In the long white bar at the top type - #50&Beyond or some other room name - then click ADD then click Join

Congratulations!! you are now on IRC using mIRC and have rejoined the 40&Beyond chat room!

Fun Stuff
To use some of the fun stuff Right click with your mouse in the right hand window (the one that lists all the people in the channel), choose fun stuff. In there will be a number of preloaded PoPuPs. Choose one and have fun. To add more PoPuPs you need to add more scripts. You can download the following ones by clicking on them and opening them in a text editor, such as Notepad, then saving the file to your hard drive with the appropriate filename (for example: bowpops1.txt or bowpops1.mrc), or you can right click on the filename and choose Save Target As and save it to your mIRC directory on your Hard Drive. If you choose the latter option you will need to use your Windows Explorer to find the files and rename the *.mrc files. By default when they download they will have the wrong file extention. They will be named bowpops<file number>.mrc.txt and you will need to remove the .txt from the end. Whichever way you choose to download the files they MUST be place in your main mIRC folder. Please note you will need to install txplay31.mrc in order to use the BowPoPs and you need to get both the .mrc and .txt files for each BowPoPs. Place all files in your main mIRC directory (usually C:\mirc) and DO NOT install mIRC under your Program Files folder (or any other subfolder) or else your added popups and sounds may not work

  1. txplay60.zip
  2. bowpops1.mrc
  3. bowpops1.txt
  4. bowpops2.mrc
  5. bowpops2.txt
  6. bowpops3.mrc
  7. bowpops3.txt
  8. bowpops4.mrc
  9. bowpops4.txt
  10. bowpops5.mrc
  11. bowpops5.txt
  12. To install these files type the following command in your mIRC window /load -rs filename.mrc. For example: /load -rs txplay31.mrc. Do NOT install the .txt files just place them in the main mIRC directory
