OLEDs May Generate Electricity
Organic Light Emitting Diodes stand a good chance at replacing LCDs an CRTs. They are cheaper and less complicated to make. Best of all they work bi-directionally. That is, apply electricity to the compound and it procuces light, apply light to the compound and it procuces electricity. This opens up a new approach to solar cells. While less efficient than current solar cell technology OLEDs may prove more economical through savings in mass production technical requirements. Small scale OLEDs could be used to recharge many types of batteries for portable devices such as cell phones. I for one would certainly consider this a blessing, too often the battery on my cell gives out at an innapropriate time. See PCMAG for further details.
