Bear Aware
There’s nothing quite like living in bear country
You go outside for a smoke at night and you better keep your eyes wide open and your ears cocked. Used to be at my old place that the neighbourhood dogs would get all excited when a bear was around and you had lots of advance warning. Now there aren’t so many dogs in this neighbourhood and the ones that are here don’t seem to care. Took my landlord’s dog out the other night when I went for a smoke, turned the corner of the garage and there walking up the lane was a big black bear - a big black shadow moving in the dark of the lane. Did the dog bark - nope, just sort of whined and headed for the house
(with me hot on his heels I might add). A few minutes later the bear wandered throuhg the yard and right up to the back door where I was standing watching him. Did the dog bark - nope, just cringed on the floor looking up at me as if I was going to save her (border collie) if the bear decided to come through the back door. The dog’s a dreamer ![]()

I’ve had that happen a few times when I was younger and living with my parents in their home out in the bush. But, now that I live in the city and the spring bear hunt has been cancelled, I’ve seen them here even. It’s getting uncontrollable.
Mind you, it’s a good thing to know you didn’t have to change your pants after that…
