Silicon Valley spars with Hollywood

20 February, 2003 (14:33) | Computer

Some interesting comments by Lawrence Lessig and others regarding impending copy protection legislation being demanded by Hollywood. One of the most interesting I think is Lessig’s observation that it is the lack of real broadband connections to the net that cause people to download music etc to their various devices. Sounds contradictory but it makes sense when he points out that

slow dial-up connections make it tough to stream content quickly to a variety of devices

and then he goes on to say

“In the future, it will be easier to pay for subscription services than to be an amateur database administrator who moves content from device to device,” Lessig said. “We’re legislating against a background of the Internet’s current architecture of content distribution, and this is a fundamental mistake.”

I had never looked at it that way before but it makes a lot of sense to me. It is through streaming that media companies will make their money off the net but dial up is completely insufficient for streaming quality content.
