bq. The normally calm world of professional golf is in turmoil after a number of the top male players have complained about a woman playing against them.
bq. The players - including Vijay Singh, the former Masters champion, and Nick Price, winner of The Open in 1994 - have criticised Annika Sorenstam, the world’s leading woman golfer, for daring to tee up against them in a competition this week.
bq. On Thursday Sorenstam, 32, will compete in the Bank of America Colonial tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, after receiving an invitation from the event’s sponsors.
bq. While millions of golf fans around the world have welcomed her entry as a chance to see whether women can compete against men in the modern game, leading lights of the US Professional Golfers’ Association have reacted with disgust at the notion of a woman taking a man’s place in the field.
