My Home Town
Well I talk about Rossland often enough I thought I would give you a glimpse of small town BC now that Spring is officially here. All pictures are linked to larger versions 1024px in width which open in a separate window.
This first shot looks down Washington St. from 2nd Ave (where I live) to Columbia Ave, the main street of the city. Washington and Columbia are the only commercial streets in town.
The next one shows Columbia Ave. looking back toward Washington St. The last big building on the right is the old Bank of Montreal building. If you look closely at the enlarged version you will see an old style painted ad on the side of it. This was actually painted on there two years ago when they were filming parts of the movie “Miracle” here. It was painted to look like it had been there for a 100 years. This building is also the last building on the left in the Washington St. shot above. The mountain on the far right is the dreaded Mt. Roberts that silly bastards such as myself climb each Canada Day (6 hours of sheer hell if you are out of shape and mildly acrophobic like me. An interesting tidbit in this picture is the first tall building on the right is also another old “hotel”, well actually it was a brothel. They recently renovated the top floors, which had been empty for many decades, and discovered writing on the walls from the ladies and their customers from the early part of the 20th C.
Looking directly to my right from where I took the previous shot is the courthouse built in 1900. It was one of the few buildings that survived the fire that destroyed the town in the early 1900’s. Sometime this summer I will go back there with my camera and take pictures inside - it is really beautiful inside with all the stained glass and oak paneling.
This last picture shows one of the heritage buildings still extant on Washington St. This was once a hotel but is now a hardware store on the main floor and apartments upstairs. Rossland has an official city design plan that buildings must adhere to for exterior renovations and new construction in an attempt to keep the turn of the century feel to the city.

Small World
We’re so used to thinking of each other as pages on a computer screen, that it catches at me when I read something like Doug Alder’s current post containing photos of his hometown of Rossland in British Columbia. I grew up less than 50 miles from the t…
