plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

Sami Ramadani has a devastating article in today’s Guardian that compares yesterday’s election in Iraq to the elections held in South Vietnam back in 1967. The spin surrounding them and the circumstances of both elections are eerily similar. No wonder I’ve been having this odd sense of déjà vu lately.

Attention Americans

31 January, 2005 (21:03) | Language | 4 comments

One thing that really gets me is the misuse of words. In particular I dislike, rather intensely I might add, the use of irregardless when what is really meant is regardless. First, the word does not actually exist in a dictionary. Second, if it did it would have the exact opposite meaning to [...]

Our Favourite Blonde is back again

31 January, 2005 (17:51) | Humor | 1 comment

A young blonde was on vacation and driving through the Everglades . She wanted to take home a pair of genuine alligator shoes in the worst way, but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking.
After becoming very frustrated with the “no haggle on prices” attitude of one of the [...]

George goes to Hell

31 January, 2005 (17:47) | Humor | 2 comments

George Bush has a heart attack and dies. Obviously, he goes to hell where the devil is waiting for him.
“I’m not sure what to do,” says the devil. “You’re on my list but I have no room for you. As you definitely have to stay here, so I’m going to have to let some-one else [...]

Take that you…you… bank!

31 January, 2005 (16:07) | Humor | 1 comment

Even though it is an urban legend that’s been circulating for at least five years under different guises, it’s still damned funny and truly strikes a chord with anyone who has ever had to deal with a bank’s arrogance and bureaucracy, which is pretty much everyone.
The attached is an actual letter that was sent to [...]

No if ands or butts

I have to thank Shelley for the link that er….inspired today’s dash of drivel.
Would you pay to see a monkey’s backside? I hope not. Monkeys will, and I guess that’s okay, though it sounds awfully close to the sort of thing that lands guys in jail here in the human realm.
A new study found that [...]

What if it was all a mistake?

29 January, 2005 (18:41) | Political | No comments

At least there is one sane Republican voice in congress. Congressman Ron Paul from the 14th congressi0nal district in Texas has stood up in congress and posed some blazingly obvious questions. I applaud him. It’s good to see he blinkers falling off a Republican. Why hasn’t a Democrat stood up and said these things. [...]

Colour me disappointed

PBS I expected better from you. I expected you to stand up and tell the hypocrite Education Sectretary, Margaret Spellings, who in the past has lauded diversity, to go take a cold shower. I expected you to tell her that you are not in the business of censoring innocuous content and neither should she [...]

If you can’t stand the heat…..

29 January, 2005 (17:13) | Media | No comments

One of the best news documentary shows on TV, for several decades now, is the CBC’s The Fifth Estate. Earlier this week they did a show on the overwhelmingly conservative bias in the US media and The O’Reilly Factor was smack dab in their gunsights. It was a good documentary. O’Reilly had been given an [...]

Racers on the track

Well, despite it not freezing overnight, the bobsled races went ahead anyways. There was a fairly decent crowd on the corner

There were 10 home made ‘bobsleds” and the first of two runs each, while slower than usual, was not bad.
