Damn that’s hard work!

8 January, 2005 (15:30) | Hiking, Photography, Rossland

Still trying to figure out how to take pictures in the snow with this Canon A70 and get rid of the blue tones. I’m guessing by the end of winter I might have figured it out. Today I tried +2 on the exposure and that was too much. The problem is that my eyesight is poor enough that I can’t tell how the shot turned out until I get home and download it into PSP, and viewing everything through yellow tinted snow goggles doesn’t help either :).

It stopped snowing hard long enough for me to grab the snowshoes and hit the Kootenay Columbia Crest trail. At the start of the trail on one end is the towns favourite sledding hill, a steep access road to the telco microwave towers on the top of Monte Christo mountain. At the bottom of that road I ran into a family from Florida that were trying to get their sleds to work on the hill but were having difficulty. Two or more feet of perfect powder has fallen since yesterday and no one else has used the hill in the interim so they were slogging through this snow (sans the benefits of snowshoes) and then trying to cut a path down to the base with their sleds in the jope that eventually it would be packed down enough to work. now that’s a lot of work.

As my trail led right up the road I packed a bunch down for them with my snowshoes as I climed up the steep hill to my turn off. A hike that would normally take me about 20 minutes took over an hour and I had to stop numerous times to catch my breath. Snowshoeing is a good workout at the best of times but when you have this much fresh powder it’s even more work. Fortunately someone early yesterday had cut trail through there so I was only compressing what had fallen since. Most steps I sunk in somewhere from halfway up my calf right up to my knees and beyond. Normally it’s easier (not to mention safer) to use ski poles for balance but the poles were sinking so far in that it was way too much work using them and I made better time without them. I had planned on going all the way to the summit but I only went halfway it was so exhausting. I’m much too much out of shape. I’ll be glad when the new (and only) gym in town opens for business later this month - I’ll be signing up immediately.

This doesn’t look very blue to me. It’s gorgeous. I found my A75 has a ’snow’ setting. It works nicely. I’ll check the manual when I get home and see if it tells me what the settings actually are. If it does I’ll pass the info on to you.

Well that would be cool Cyndy. I haven’t found a snow setting on mine. It’s less blue because I’ve played with it in PaintShop Pro to get rid of some of the blue.

Hey! That looks just like my yard! You know, the snow does give off a blue tint naturally, at least here it does. I think it’s amazing and I never get tired of admiring its beauty, whatever window I look out of, or when standing out in the middle of it, nature’s palette full of hues and tints are unlike anywhere else I’ve seen. It’s like being in a fairy tale.
