What a great place to live
Last Sunday I went to a tsunami victims benefit concert here in town. All the performers were locals. Well almost all, my neighbour in the other apartment in the house is Tomo who is visiting us from Japan for a year. Tomo is a pretty good guitar player and has written some nice sounding songs (in Japanese). He performed along with a couple of his friends from Rossland and borrowed my acoustic guitar for the gig as he only has his Fender electric with him. The concert was an enormous success, and who knew how many talented people we had in the area!
Anyway the point of the concert was to raise money for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières a very worthwhile cause because they can always use the money for other projects as well. They currently have medical personnel operating in some 30 countrioes around the world and their only agenda is delivering healthcare to those who need it:
Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF) delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation.
The concert was held in the historic Miner’s Hall and the hall was full to capacity (about 250 people) long before the concert started. People still kept coming and seeing there was no room they simply dropped off cheques or put money in the pot. In several hours this small town of 3500 people raised over $11,000 dollars. In addition to this was another $4,000 raised forthe same group in the 3 days preceeding the concert at a table set up just inside the entrance to the town’s grocery store, and the money isstill coming in. The concert organizer, Tammy, who put the whole concert together in a couple of days, is being stopped by people on the street and given cheques for $500. I’m impressed with the heart this town has shown and it is just one more reason why I want to continue living here.
