Don’t you just hate it when you believe some programmer’s promise only to discover well into installation that they were lying? I’ve long wanted to switch from Mozilla Suite to the individual Firefox and Thunderbird but I’ve been waiting until Thunderbird added an import utility to import messages, settings etc. from Mozilla. I saw this morning that they had added this capabillity to the latest version, or so they said, so I downloaded it and installed it.

I paid close attention to every prompt that came up when installing and when opening it for the first time. There was no opportunity to import from Mozilla. Once it is opened for the first time it wants you to create email accounts. I said no, thinking I could still import my Mozilla stuff; after all they promised me I could. So I go to Import choose Mail and the only choices I have are Communicator 4.x, Eudora, Outlook and Outlook Express. I did some research and apparently, on occassion, it will ask when you first open Thunderbird, but in my case it did not. I suspect that is because Mozila was storing its setting on my C drive and I put Thunderbird completely on my G drive. Still it should have found that moz was installed and asked! Aaaargh, I had other things I wanted to get done today!

As a result I spent the better part of my day manually moving all my messages and recreating my address book. This was, of course, after I figured out how it was storing messages and folders and the method I would need to use to move stuff. Well one good thing about it is that Thunderbird lets me store my email in a place of my choosing unlike Mozilla which insisted on c:\windows\profiles\….. which ate up a lot of valuable real estate on my C drive - about 200MB worth. Now that I’ve moved everything I’ve recovered that space.

Give me a little link love would ya ;):
