I have to thank Shelley for the link that er….inspired today’s dash of drivel.

Would you pay to see a monkey’s backside? I hope not. Monkeys will, and I guess that’s okay, though it sounds awfully close to the sort of thing that lands guys in jail here in the human realm.

A new study found that male monkeys will give up their juice rewards in order to ogle pictures of female monkey’s bottoms. The way the experiment was set up, the act is akin to paying for the images, the researchers say.

The rhesus macaque monkeys also splurged on photos of top-dog counterparts, the high-ranking primates. Maybe that’s like you or me buying People magazine.

The research, which will be detailed in the March issue of Current Biology, gets more interesting.

The scientists actually had to pay these guys, in the form of extra juice, to get them to look at images of lower-ranking monkeys.

Curiously, the monkeys in the test hadn’t had any direct physical contact with the monkeys in the photos, so they didn’t have personal experience with who was hot and who was not.

It seems to me that this research poses quitethe conundrum for the fundies in and around the Bush administration. I mean here we have close relatives of ours on the evolutionary tree showing an inate preference for what the fundies would call, in humans, pornography. Here are these relatives of ours who have no shame, and no concept of sin to make them feel shame, eagerly ogling a stranger’s buttocks and obviously getting off on it enough to give up their rewards. A bit of a sticky wicket eh wot?

Imagine the difficulty the fundies will have with this. Are they going to complain that government funding was used to promote porn (albeit amongst monkies) and in doing so have to forgo their opposition to evolutionary theory? Do they admit thatit’s perfectly natural for males to want to ogle unknown female’s “privates” and thus weaken their arguments that pornography is deviant behaviour? I can’t wait until someone busted on a porn charge trys to use this research to prove it’s completely natural. Sex (especially anything remotely classifiable as deviant in their worldview) and evolution, two of the biggest triggers the fundies have and here they get so inextricably linked. What’s a poor fundie to do?

Ah, what a good day. Any day that bring to light something that can get the fundies shorts in a knot is a good day indeed.
