Let me take that back
I don’t know about you but I’m having a good laugh at the expense of all those scientists who back in ‘93 huffed and puffed and stated outright that the premise behind the movie Jurassic Park was simply a no go. That we could never find 70 million year old cells from which to extract DNA was deemed to be patently obvious. Well to be fair that was only to be expected as at that point the only thought anyone had on retrieving those cells was via insects in amber and that proved to be a no go as the cells had been essentially plasticized. Never the less you’d think that scientists would have learned by now to never say never when it comes to the unknown.
There are things in science you can be absolutely certain of; things like brain tissue, short of intervention by a non-existant mythical deity, does not spontaneously regenerate. Those sorts of things you can make absolute pronouncements on. Other things however a great deal of circumspection with regards to one’s pronouncements is called for
I am of course referring to the recent discovery of 70 million year old soft tissue in the leg bone of a Tyrannosaurus rex. It appears as if this is the original tissue and not plasticized (cells replaced by other substances). If this is he case it is possible htey may be able to extract DNA from the tissue, however, DNA is very fragile and any they do extract will be broken strands. They would need an unbroken strand to clone in order to build a new dinosaur a la Jurrasic Park.
So until that day arrives we will just have to be satisfied with the dinosaurs we have in Ottawa, London and Washington
