The Internet to the rescue
I have a very dear old friend who lives in Denver. In fact if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t have this blog because she’s responsible (and if you’re reading this my dear it’s still ALL your fault) for getting me into geeky type behavoiur in the first place (running a dial up DOS based BBS back in 1993). She is going through a very tough time financially, to the point of having to sell her house to a friend to keep it out of the hands of the bank. We’ve sort of lost touch with each other a bit what with neither of us being able to afford to travel but last week I thought I would give her a call. Imagine my horror when instead of reaching her I got a “this number is not in service” recording. I assumed immediately that she not only lost the house but was no longer able to live there and was reduced to being a bag lady (she always said she wanted to be one - in South America
). With some trepidation I sent off an email to her figuring it would bounce or that she might never get it but to my relief she called me today and it turms out that she just had too many problems with that telco and as switched to a cell. If it hasdn’t been for the net I would have lost all contact with this friend - Thanks DARPA et al.
