CBC to shut down Newsworld International
Well this is a real shame and a great loss for media diversity in the US. At a time when the importance of US residents getting a foreign viewpoint on the news is so great it baffles me why someone as smart as Al Gore (who owns the network) is shuutting down one major source of that information. Maybe Al is so wrapped in to the American way of viewing the world that he doesn’t think other viewpoints are important. If so that would be a real shame as well. NWI was beamed by satellite into over 20 million US homes and more by cable. The path to US isolantionism continues.

The loss of NWI in our household is a very great loss. For those of us addicted to the long view of world politics and recent history and the wide view of nations large and small there is really no place to get a fix after NWI disappears. Much of NWI ’s content is so educational as to fit directly into
high school curriculum (if students still have that option). This channel made us grow and expanded the world.
I would guess from the quality of the commercials that NWI did not have a large enough audience to pay the bills. This makes any business vulnerable to buy out. It could be that Al Gore and Joe Hyatt (who ever he is) were not interested in NWI at all and only saw an inexpensive business on the chopping block.
One interesting thing is that after spending a summer in Quebec and watching the CBC public programming it was evident the Canada gets inferior world wide news to that of NWI.
