It’s a gas
For you americans who think you are suffering with gas at slightly over $2 per gallon consider what we are paying here in Canada. Today gas is at $1.05CDN per litre. That works out to $3.32 USD per US gallon.
update: Common Dreams reports the average price of gas in the US is now $2.61 per gallon.

Nothing surprising about it at all. A lot of the Canadian oil patch is owned by US oil companies either directly or through their subsidiaries. Canada has always been reluctant to process its own raw materials, instead shipping them out (like raw logs in BC)and letting other countries make the real money from value adds. We are really stupid that way, but that’s the way the corporations that own our politicians want it.
I think it’s a real hoot that Chavez is offering to supply cheap gas to the poor in the US. Now that’s really going to piss off Bush and his corporate bosses.

Ah, that makes sense–well not for the people, but for the corporations. Crazy world! Seriously, watch out for Pat Robertson.

If you strip away all the taxes (Federal & Provincial) gas price are actually a little bit cheaper in Canada than in the USA. Canadian taxes on fuel is mucher higher. We use the same tax strategy on tobacco and alcohol.

That is odd when you consider that Canada is the number one importer of oil to the US: Crude Oil and Total Petroleum Imports. Canada seems to have plenty of oil–just maybe not the means to refine it and distribute it cheaply? What am I missing here? I’m boggled.
By the way, since Pat Robertson is after Chavez and Venezuela (number four oil importer to the US), you all might be on the lookout for his prayer brigade coming your way next. In fact, I fear he might pray the rest of the world dead so that we can have free oil.
