We are not alone

9 May, 2006 (17:42) | Science, Sociology

For a long mankind has thought that we were the only self-aware species. now scientists appear to have shown that dolphins call each other by names when communicating. That’s significant because you can’t use names without being self-aware.

This could be a very important discovery on the path to saving the planet. If this can be shown to be true think of the reaction of the public to the dolphin genocide carried out each year by fishing fleets. As long as it’s just an “animal”, as long as it’s just whacko crazy tree huggers insisting that dolphins are sentient, then it’s OK (not nice but still OK) to kill them while fishing. The moment they are shown by science to be sentient, self-aware creatures that all changes, then it becomes murder and the public will revolt at being a part of that.
