July 1, 1867 marked the peaceful birth of Canada as a nation rather than a British colony. Known at the time as the Dominion of Canada, July 1st was, until the late 60s, celebrated as Dominion Day but now is simply called Canada Day. So Happy 139th birthday Canada!
