Happy Birthday Canada
July 1, 1867 marked the peaceful birth of Canada as a nation rather than a British colony. Known at the time as the Dominion of Canada, July 1st was, until the late 60s, celebrated as Dominion Day but now is simply called Canada Day. So Happy 139th birthday Canada!

Yes there is - it’s the little matter of the defeat of the French on the Plains of Abraham in 1759 when Major General James Wolfe launched a surprise attack by scaling the cliffs surrounding Quebec City along the St Lawrence River and quickly defeated Lieutenant General the marquis de Montcalm, commander of the fort. To this day the many Quebecois consider the province of Quebec to be a sovereign country and do not celebrate Canada Day. One of these days when the hotheads get too much powre they will separate and then discover what a mistake that was.

Happy Canada Day.
I know little about Canada’s history–just some tidbits that I learned in public school history classes.
One troubling thing with America’s day of independence is that it has quite a different meaning for Native Americans. I cannot help but think of it, every year at this time, and it makes celebrating impossible (well, that, along with our foreign policy, an idiot/devil president, corruption, etc.).
Well, I wonder, is there anything similar in Canada’s history that makes celebrating this day difficult?
This topic just interests me. It’s weird to be around so many over-the-top Fourth of July celebrators. I’m sure many put little thought into it: they just get drunk and blow each other up with fireworks (maybe some bizarre reflection of our foreign policy). Ironically, Native American reservations are a prime place to purchase fireworks. This always troubled me. How could they, Native Americans, play a role like this in such a celebration? Maybe it’s just profiteering (reservations have different laws, and I think they can sell fireworks that are illegal elsewhere in the US). Or maybe those Native Americans are just helping us blow each other up.
