True Colours Shown
Blue is the colour of the Conservative Part of Canada. Now I’m sure they could come up with all kinds of nice platitudinous reasons for it being blue but in reality it’s because they think they are: elites, blue bloods, above the rest of us commoners, not bound by the same laws or social constraints the rest of us commoners are.
First as opposition leader, and now as Prime Minister, Steven Harper has made lots of noise about the public’s safety, the war on terror, law and order, and so forth. However, recently his true colours came through quite clearly. I’ll let Lawrence Martin in the Toronto Globe and Mail tell the story:
By way of illustration, on a recent trip, the Prime Minister was asked by a flight attendant to turn off his cellphone and BlackBerry. Mr. Harper declined. The pilot then made a request, saying it was for safety purposes. The PM relented. But, at the end of the journey, one of his staffers gave the pilot some news: His services would no longer be required on prime ministerial trips.
The aviator should have known that this is the new Ottawa. In Harpertown, you fall in line or fall from favour.
I hope that pilot retorted something along the lines of “Good because I refuse to fly anyone who has no concern for public safety!”
There it is in a nutshell he, and certainly his office, feels he is above the law. Just another thing he and Bush have in common. You can bet if some Canadian of arabic extraction had done the same , CSIS and the RCMP would be swarming all over him, comments would be made by Harper and others of his ilk about the war on terrorism and the need for vigilance, public safety would be thrown in everyone’s face, the usual scare tactics.
