You’re late to the game Jack
Gee Jack this is something I and others been saying for years, only you don’t go far enough. Canada should scrap its military and spend all that money on the Coast Guard for land/sea rescue and sovereignty protection.
No tags for this post.Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton says Canada’s military should be focusing on domestic sovereignty issues, including protecting Canada’s coastline from illegal fishing boats, instead of fighting the Taliban in southern Afghanistan.
At a recent convention, the party voted in favour of immediately withdrawing Canadian troops from Afghanistan.
In an interview with CBC Radio in Fredericton on Wednesday, Layton also said those troops would be more effective at protecting Canada’s fishing grounds from foreign trawlers.
“We feel a big part of our role should be our sovereignty issues, such as up North, and also in dealing with the fishing with fleets off our coastline who are coming in and destroying the ecosystems,” he said. (read more)

It will really depend on the country and it’s geographical location. The only threats to Canada’s sovereignty will come on the coastlines - specifically the arctic where Canada asserts its sovereignity over most of the North West Passage. The Coast Guard is sufficient for this - their ships are well armed.
Canada is surrounded on 3 sides by oceans. Again that is really Coast Guard territory. The reality is there is no one who is going to invade Canada unless it is the US in order to take our resources and they’ve pretty much already done that through NAFTA and corporate takeovers. If the US should choose to militarily invade Canada there is nothing the Canadian Armed Forces could do to stop them. We simply don’t have the manpower, finances and machinmery to mount that large a standing armed forces. So, ands I only mean this for Canada, since our glorious leaders have sadly abandined the Pearson model of internation peace keepers for Canada’s military then we should disband the military and save all that money for more important things like universal healthcare, paying off the nationalo debt, foreign aid etc.

Out of curiousity, how does a country protect its sovereignty without a military? I just want to hear your take on this - I don’t mean to sound sarcastic.
