Weird and Frustrating

28 November, 2006 (22:06) | Computer, Personal

The section of my website that gets the most hits is my sadly neglected recipes section. This blog gets about 20 visits a day, I have no idea how many read it solely in syndication, whereas the cooking site gets between 200 and 400 hits a day. Seeing these stats in Google Analytic I decided I would see if I can generate some income via Google Adsense.

That’s all well and good. I got the necessary code from them, fired up my html editor and started to plug in the code. That’s when the fun really started. The editor (no it is not WYSIWYG in case you didn’t follow the link) gives you the opportunity to check your code by seeing the output in an internal viewer. When I would look in the viewer I could see the ads but when I saved the page then uploaded it I couldn’t. Sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn’t. Because I don’t know CSS well enough to try and do a page like this one just with CSS I have to use nested tables to make it work. I found one error in table widths that caused some problems (forced the ads off the page) but I still had the problem. I rewrote all my templates and then created each page afresh by copying the critical data into new pages and that seemed to work, most, but not all, the time.

In the end I “think” I know what he problem is. Instead of relying on the internal viewer I opened a browser and looked at the saved page on my local drive. If I could see the ads then there is no possible reason why I shouldn’t see them online. I think what’s happening is that even when I save the file in the editor it doesn’t update the actual file, just the temp file, until the editor is closed (or possibly until the file is closed – I still need to test that) and as a result I was not uploading a corrected file. I sure hope that’s the case because otherwise this has driven me absolutely batty trying to figure it out.

Ads are workin fine for me bro. Any time you need help with CSS, feel free to ping me at http://www.macwebguru.com – there are also a bunch of pre-built site templates you’re more than welcome to pull down and pilfer for parts. CSS isn’t that hard to learn, but adding tables to a CSS construction definitely can lead to grief. Been THERE. I’ve also got a couple of hundred recipies in a FileMaker Pro DB you’re welcome to!
