Obama in 2008?
Today’s LA Times points to a poll that should make those Democrats who aren’t already having second thoughts about Hillary in 2008 begin to question their judgment.
WASHINGTON — Democrats have an overwhelmingly favorable view of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, but she would be soundly beaten if she ran for president against Republican Sen. John McCain now, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.
Underscoring the New York Democrat’s potential vulnerability, the poll also found that Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican little known to most voters, would give Clinton a run for her money.
Given a choice between McCain and Clinton, half of those surveyed said they would vote for the Arizona Republican, compared with 36% for the former first lady. In a matchup with Romney, the poll indicated Clinton would win by just 6 percentage points, 42% to 36%.
Those findings lend credence to some Democrats’ fear that despite Clinton’s strength within the party, she is too polarizing a figure to win the White House.
That doesn’t leave many viable options at this point (Hillary would be my very last choice, she is far too much a pseudo Democrat for my taste, and Kucinich is not now, nor will he ever be, a truly viable candidate). Many are starting to point to Barack Obama as a viable candidate, and he’s one I would like to see win it. However you have to ask yourself a few questions, not the least of which is would he survive the campaign nevertheless his presidency were he to be elected. I think it’s doubtful. As much as I would like it to be so I don’t think America is ready for a black president, no matter how good he may be. There is still way too much nascent and outright racism in the US and it would not take long for some good ole white boy to decide he’s going to put that uppity n****r in his place. The Secret Service would have more than their hands full. They couldn’t protect the Kennedys or Reagan, it’s unlikely they would be able to stop someone who is truly determined and the prospect of a black president would bring the determined crawling out of the slime.
It’s not like there is a long history of voters electing blacks to high office. Obama is only the 3rd black senator since the end of the civil war in 1865. That’s not a good sign folks, not good at all. As much as I would like to see him in the white house I think he will do much more good for Americans of all ethnicity where he is currently. I’d hate to see him throw his life away, he’s one of the most decent politicians the Democrats have.

Thanks Ken, I’ll do that. I like Obama, but I don’t think he’s ready and I think he would be signing his death warrant
I’ve heard Richardson’s name but I don’t know anything about him. At this point I’m firmly in the camp of “Anyone but Clinton”. I can’t stand her and that’s a shame because I’d love to see a woman in command in the oval office.

Doug – Take a look at Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico. he hasn’t openly declared, but he’s in the mix and in the hunt. I think he could make a strong showing.
