Remembrances of things past
Frank points to this wonderful piece by the late great jazz singer,
(I think that is either from her TV show of the late 50s or else from’s show)
Which got me thinking about some old I have kicking around here that belonged to my parents. I have a bunch of , some ,some , , and a rare , along with others who were popular in the 40s and 50s.
I have fond memories of these recordings from when I was a kid and I wish I had a 78rpm turntable I could play them on and rip them from, but I have neither.
One record in particular brings back forbidden memories as my mother always got embarrassed when we put it on and forbade us kids to play it. That recording was “” on the B side and “” on the A side. The singer of course was the sexy, provocative and inimitable (.pdf).
Ah my mom was such a prude back in those days halcyon days of my youth. To be expected I suppose, granny was a Victorian nurse who would go through catalogues and newspapers and cut out anything that showed the slightest hint of sexuality before letting my mother read them.
Looking again today at the collection of 78s I’m quite impressed with the majority of what they chose to listen to. It’s no wonder I love the , and of the 40s and 50s . It’s the music I grew up on. Thanks Mom and Dad.

YouTube has a pair of clips for a total of close to 15 minutes of Benny Goodman, Ella, and Peggy Lee in 1959 (with Lionel Hampton, Shelly Manne, Andre Previn and Jack Lesberg). That clip we posted is actually from the Johnny Cash Show (late sixties?)
