aaargh
Suddenly about 6 weeks ago my ability to use a feature at my bank that lets me email money from my account to anyone whose bank accepts it (part of the Interac system) stopped working. Today I finally found out why. The 3rd party CertaPay that acts as the arbiter between banks in the exchange does not support sender verify/callouts. This is a very useful and I think important part of email security. What it does is when your server receives an email from somewhere it fires back a query to that server to get confirmation of the legitimacy of the email - basically it verifies the existence of the stated originating server. This helps to reduce the mount of SPAM received because spammers frequerntly forge headers to deceive servers. Because their server is not supporting it my server was sending anything from them to the bit bucket. AAARGH!
I think the problem started about the time I installed some new security features to cPanel. Nevertheless it boggles my mind that a financial institution would not have this enabled as yet one more piece of security. I let CertaPay know this and I am about to let TD Canada Trust my bank know that they are dealing with a problematic situation.
