WHEN Hurricane Frances ripped through Gainesville, Fla., in 2004, Christopher Swinney, an anesthesiologist, was without electricity for a week. A few weeks ago, Dr. Swinney lost power again, but this time he was ready.

great idea in emergencies like this but then they go on to suggest fleets of hybrids plugged into the grid putting power back into the grid. Huh? Yes technically feasible but desirable? I don’t think so.
During a recent six-hour power failure, Mr. Factor estimated that his 2005 Prius used less than one gallon of gasoline.
Great - so let’s see he paid some $2+ dollars for 6 hours power - rather expensive I’d say, necessary given his circumstances, but in a non emergency way too expensive.
Not to mention that running all those (when the gas engine comes on to charge the batteries) would be a further drain on oil reserves and contribute to and .
