OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada’s foreign ministry, responding to pressure from close allies, said on Saturday it would remove the and from a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured.
Both nations expressed unhappiness after it emerged they had been listed in a document that formed part of a training course manual on awareness given to Canadian diplomats.
Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier said he regretted the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the manual, which also classified some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture.
“It contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies. I have directed that the manual be reviewed and rewritten,” Bernier said in a statement. (Read more…)

Dear Mr. Atamenko
I can not sufficiently express my disgust with our current government for it’s cowardly caving in to pressure from the US and Israel to have their names removed from the recent list of torture sponsoring states include in the training manual for Canadian diplomats. What has happened to standing up for the truth? No one in their right minds, particularly after the details of the Maher Arar, and Abu Ghraib cases became known, would consider the US to be anything but a torture sponsoring state. I hope you and the rest of the opposition will find the courage to stand up in the house and call this government a disgrace for this action.
