Now it gets interesting

A question on many people’s minds today is what will the US do now that has resigned, and more specifically what or potential does this have to offer the . Regardless of who replaces him, and we all know that is going to be his brother, there is plenty of room now for some political maneuvering.

If wants to help out he can take this opportunity to drop sanctions, open trade, declare the sanctions were a success - having worn Castro down (ya only took 50 years to do so) and that the public should remember that it was a Republican that ended the sanctions and took the first steps towards bringing American corporate dictatorship democracy back to .

wants, hell needs, the Latino vote so badly she won’t venture an opinion other than stay the course and see what happens I’m sure. She will no doubt identify it as a positive development, which of course is doing no more than stating the obvious.

however has made such a big point about being a uniter, of reaching out to the opposition, to not being afraid to deal one on one with even the most ruthless national leaders, that this is a perfect opportunity for him. Hell it’s ready made for him.

McCain won’t have a position on this until he knows what the party faithful want. The only opportunity he’s got here is to screw up even further.

Add to the above the stunning defeat of Musharraf’s party in Pakistan’s elections yesterday. It will be very interesting to see how the candidates deal with this and how they will deal with the possible military coup that could follow on the heels of the election. It’s hard to imagine Musharraf giving up power that easily.

Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted from power in Musharraf’s bloodless coup in 1999, was one of the winners from Monday’s election.

His Pakistan Muslim League-N party was coming second having won 66 seats, with only a few results still to be confirmed, according to the private GEO TV station.

Only the Pakistan People’s Party of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in the run-up to the elections, won more national assembly seat — 87 so far.

The -allied Pakistan Muslim League-Q won 38 seats in the preliminary results. Ten national assembly results were outstanding at 1930 GMT Tuesday.

The US has pumped billions of dollars into , in terms of weaponry and other military aid, to ostensibly fight al-Qaeda but in reality to prop up a business friendly corrupt dictator, Musharraf. Gee here’s a muslim nation, nuclear capable, somewhat friendly to terrorists, and the US is giving them weapons to support a hated leader, go figure. The smart thing to do right now, assuming there vote stands and there is not military junta put in place, is for the US to switch that aid money to civilian projects in Pakistan. Help make the common person’s life better and in doing so show a Muslim nation (and by extension all other such Muslim nations) that they are better off with that than they would be with the Taliban. But that is just too naive and simple I guess.
