This has been all over the news tonight. Great recovery on the part of the pilot but with like that why the hell was he trying to land in the first place? Stu?

Reported crosswinds were 25 knots, the airbus is rated to take 30 knots. That runway has an ILS.
Still, I would have taken the other runway, shorter, no ILS, but more into the wind.
The copilot (she) was flying, the more experienced captain let her do the landing. I would have taken over as PIC in his case. 1 foot lower and it would have been a catastrophe!

Thanks Stu - I figured you’d have the straight goods. Looks like the copilot needs to do more high cross wind simulator training for that plane. The Captain took an awful risk with wind conditions approaching max ratings level.

Latest news here has the captain initiating the go-around.

BTW, the 30 knots are merely the manufacturer’s DEMONSTRATED cross-wind component. One can manage about 20% more in extreme cases (= 36?). The gust was 50-60 knots, I believe (106+ km/h)???

Training requirements are the same for captain and co, BTW.
