Dear America
On behalf of , and in particular , I would like to apologize for something that has just come to my attention.
Where did the neo-conservative movement first take root? Most people would say California, Ronald Reagan’s Washington, ’s England or even Ontario premier Mike Harris’s regime. The answer, actually, is British Columbia.
t Premier took the theories of — brought up to Vancouver by a then-obscure think-tank called the Fraser Institute — and took them to heart: In 1983 he introduced his restraint program, taking the knife to government and creating a showdown with the most powerful union movement in Canada.
It was colourful, polarizing and — predictably — dismissed as one of those “wacky” things by easterners who were slow to catch its import. In reality it was a radical new political movement. We introduced in practice and gave an early hint of the movement’s rising power. Don’t take my word for it, listen to Friedman himself: He praised the B.C. premier for out-neo-conning Thatcher, no easy task.
It would appear that we are somewhat to blame for your current state of fucking idiocy in Washington and politics in general. Please accept our humble .
