This is a sad day for music lovers. Where once there was a plethora of radio orchestras, in North America, today there is only one remaining, the . Based in Vancouver this orchestra has been a valuable breeding ground for new composers and performers. Today the CBC announced that this will be the for the orchestra due to funding cutbacks by the federal government.
The has been the victim of the consistent, and I would say by the feds for a long time. For many decades, under both , their funding has been steadily cut, because they consistently bite the hand that feeds them. The CBC today in nowhere near the rich cultural milieu that it was in the past and now it is losing one of its crown jewels. In an era of budget surpluses this is totally unacceptable.
