Harper and Religion

19 February, 2010 (20:26) | Canada, Political

The US is not alone in the influence of religion on politics

No policy or program changes could account for the sudden spike in grants to religious groups.

Democracy has faced several threats under Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, not the least of which is the political influence of religious conservatives and extremists.

Prime examples include recent political interference with the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights and Democracy) and federal de-funding of the ecumenical development group KAIROS. In each case, the Christian Right and the Jewish Right worked together aggressively to torpedo people and ideas with which they (and, not coincidentally) the Harper government do not agree.
