Memo to Self

When holding important committee meetings and

  1. the meeting room is locked because the meeting was scheduled later than usual
  2. City staff have gone home
  3. the one councilor on your committee doesn't have his keys to city hall with him
do not, I repeat, do not retire to the local pub to hold said meeting :-)

We go to Council on Monday night to present our recommendations. We will be recommending that council approve funds for the initial stages of the Rossland FTTH (fiber to the home) network. Those stages involve joining CMON, buying 96 strands of fiber to be added to the CMON/SD20 build and doing a feasibility study that involves polling the community as well as preliminary network design in order to estimate costs. The feasibility study will be used to create the business case as well as a guide for the eventual RFP (request for proposal) for network construction.

So far it appears to be slam dunk for city council. There is only one of seven councilors who is vehemently opposed to the idea and he has had to recuse himself from voting as he works for the local telco who has been trying to deep six CMON's network from the start. If I have time this weekend I will write the story of how all of this came about, and of course my role in it :-)
