Aye and fetch me some grog would ye an make it the 12 yr old Appleton’s or ye’ll be keelhauled afore sunset ye scurvy dog.

Peter T. Leeson of Department of Economics at the University of West Virginia has just published an paper on the The Law and Economics of Pirate Organization.

This paper investigates the internal governance institutions of violent criminal enterprise by examining the law, economics, and organization of pirates. To effectively organize their banditry, pirates required mechanisms to prevent internal predation, minimize crew conflict, and maximize piratical profit. I argue that pirates devised two institutions for this purpose. First, I analyze the system of piratical checks and balances that crews used to constrain captain predation. Second, I examine how pirates used democratic constitutions to minimize conflict and create piratical law and order. Remarkably, pirates adopted both of these institutions before the United States or England. Pirate governance created sufficient order and cooperation to make pirates one of the most sophisticated and successful criminal organizations in history.

It’s a good read and you’ll learn a lot about the real life of Pyrates rather than what the movies give you.

A sure sign Permalink this Drivel Similar Drivel: Bizarre Drivel

What the hell is wrong with college fraternities today.

Such a shocking disregard for their history. What self-respecting fraternity would allow this sort of behavior to take place and not offer to assist the young lady. Instead they stood there and watched for 30 minutes then called the cops. Shocking I say. Why back in the day the young assholes gentlemen would have been all over her with offers of assistance. Maybe they hadn’t swilled sipped enough that American piss water misconstrued as beer malted beverage during dinner.

Why they didn’t even video tape her performance and put it on YouTube so she could have a warm reminder of her time in their house.

A sure sign of the decline of the American Empire I say. A sure sign.

Turned Off Permalink this Drivel Similar Drivel: Bizarre Drivel

Here’s a story not many today know about or remember, but it was heavily in the news back in 1969 when the US Army Corps of Engineers turned off the American side of Niagara Falls in order to inspect the talus at the base and see whether removal of it was warranted or even feasible.

Woman Uses Dog to Start Her Car Permalink this Drivel Similar Drivel: Bizarre Drivel, Humorous Drivel

Truly bizaare

A stranded motorist in Addlestone, Surrey used her dog George to start her car.

Apparently, Juliette Piesley, 39, changed the battery in her electronic key fob but couldn’t get her engine started. She called the AA, and when patrolman Kevin Gorman came to her rescue, he realized that the key’s security system immobilizer chip, which must be near a car’s dashboard to start, was no where to be seen.

Piesley said that her dog must have eaten it. The patrolman picked up the dog and placed him in the front seat. Only then was he able to get the car started. (more
