I was sitting outside enjoying my after work coffee when I was visited by a bunch of White Crowned Sparrows. Alas my camera sucks and the pictures aren’t good but here’s a mating pair

Build your own “steady cam” for less than a buck. This is really good, I’ll be trying it soon.

Professor Fumolatro and The Veritas League Permalink this Drivel Similar Drivel: Literary Drivel, Photography Drivel

This site is one of the more interesting uses of Flickr I’ve seen yet. It combines group photography with a serial novel - action adventure - written by the participants as they go.

This is a participatory serial photo-blog chronicling the lamentably fictional adventures of Professor Angelus P. Fumolatro, steampunk renaissance man, and his companions the fellow members of The Veritas League. Follow them as they travel the globe in a fictional future-past fighting the forces of evil while inventing and utilizing mad hybrids of Edwardian aesthetics and late-twentieth century technology.
(Creative influences include steampunk, H.P. Lovecraft, and pulp/comic/melodramatic narrative styles.)

A miniscule fragment of background:
Years ago, Professor Angelus P. Fumolatro and his boyhood friend the Reverend Allon M. Oryza CSP (joined by their teacher and mentor Gunther Wasserstrom) formed “The Veritas League”. Their charge: Seek and protect the truth above all. Be on guard that the truth shall never be hidden by lies and dogma, nor shall the power of the sciences (both natural and otherwise) ever be corrupted, perverted or turned to serve the forces of evil.
Through the years the league has grown into a well connected network of like-minded scientists, artisans and craftsmen. Now, whenever sinister forces arise, the league stands ready to leap into the fray with science and intellect as their weapons and truth as their shield. Their battle cry: ”Veritas Vincit!” (Truth Conquers!)

Well done lads!

The picture above was taken a few minutes ago from my front porch. The local landfill is on fire. It’s about 500-600 meters away, but contained.

New photos of Jupiter from NASA - here is one of my favourites

false colour picture of storm on Jupiter

These images, taken with the LEISA infrared camera on the New Horizons Ralph instrument, show fine details in Jupiter’s turbulent atmosphere using light that can only be seen using infrared sensors. These are “false color” pictures made by assigning infrared wavelengths to the colors red, green and blue. LEISA (Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array) takes images across 250 IR wavelengths in the range from 1.25 to 2.5 microns, allowing scientists to obtain an infrared spectrum at every location on Jupiter. A micron is one millionth of a meter. (more…)
